Key Stage 1 (5-7 years)

Head of Pre-Prep is Becky Saxby who has given many years of dedicated service to Spring Grove School. Becky liaises carefully with Head of Early Years, Carol Clark, in ensuring that the transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1 (specifically from Reception to Year 1) is completed smoothly.

Children in Years 1 and 2 begin to spread their wings as they grow, developing independence in their learning. The class teachers, supported by Teaching Assistants, teach most of the subjects. Computing, French, Music and PE are taught by specialist teachers.

At the end of Year 2 (when the pupils are about 7 years old) they will take the Key Stage 1 SATS assessment tests during the Summer Term. These are internally marked and provide a thorough assessment of progress prior to transition to Prep 3.

At this age, children begin homework which concentrates on developing their language and numeracy skills. Specialist teaching in art, music and sport allows the children to develop a wider range of skills at an early age. The children are very keen to take advantage of the after-school activities programme and some have the opportunity to participate in inter-school matches. The headmaster’s ball games club is a very popular option.

The children build firm friendships and gain opportunities to become part of a team. In Year 1 the children are assigned to one of the four Houses and will play a full part in all House activities. Please click here for information on the four Houses.

We expect them to take greater responsibility for themselves and each other and we expect them to play a full part in the life of the school.
