The wellbeing of every member of the school community is at the heart of everything we do at Spring Grove. The staff know all the children well, and our class sizes and staff ratios allow for individual attention for every child. The family focus and ethos of the school means that the wellbeing of our children is embedded in our daily routine, in the curriculum, and in our extra-curricular activities – here are just a few examples of what we do:

  • Our Deputy Head, Mrs Saxby, teaches PSHCE across the whole school, from the pre-school Giraffes class (3-4 year olds) upwards, and all our staff are trained and having ongoing training in mental health awareness. 
  • Singing for everyone is a major focus at Spring Grove – we sing together every morning and singing helps to release stress and boost self-confidence in children of all ages.
  • Our form assemblies allow all of our children to take their turn to participate and shine, and the themes help the children to explore some thought-provoking issues.
  • The new SG50 library provides a wonderful space for reading and quiet time – we read aloud to the children regularly in lesson time, and the children may go to ‘quiet club’ at break or lunchtime if they wish to read their books in an IT-free zone.
  • The school stands in 14 acres of grounds, and unless the weather is very bad indeed children are outside every day in waterproofs and wellies. There is a buddy system at playtime, led by the Year 6 children, which is designed to help anyone who feels worried or insecure out on the field.
  • Forest School is an integral part of the curriculum, allowing children to explore new ideas and skills and to develop independence.

Form Teachers

Our form teachers are vitally important people in the lives of all children. Your form teacher is your child’s champion, ensuring that the children are making the most of every opportunity. They maintain daily contact with parents and act on any concerns that may arise. In addition, regular formal meetings ensure that the children’s progress is discussed and targets set.

House System

We have four school Houses – Austen, Dickens, Conrad and Chaucer – named after four famous authors who all had an association with Kent. In fact, Joseph Conrad lived at Spring Grove for 6 months in 1919 and a little over a 100 years before that, Jane Austen may well have been a visitor to the house when she was staying at Godmersham House.

All children in Years 1 – 6 belong to one of the Houses, as do all members of staff. The House system offers the children a chance to get to know each other throughout the age range. House sports events encourage teamwork as does the celebrated House Entertainments. We also undertake occasional cross-curricular work in House groups and enjoy House lunches. 

Rewards

Praise forms an integral part of our teaching methods. From start to finish the children receive praise for a job well done, for politeness shown, for consideration shown to others. From a simple “well done” to an award presented in assembly, all children receive praise which provides the necessary stimulus to progress. Stars are awarded for something outstanding that the pupil may have done within the classroom, on the sports field or specifically to do with Music, Art or any of the numerous clubs and activities on offer. The teacher can determine how many stars the pupil should receive for the outstanding piece of work or effort. 

Jelly the Giraffe is the House Mascot that everyone wants! Every Friday Jelly is awarded to the House that has earned the most stars during the previous seven days. Underlying this friendly competition is the encouragement that is given to the children to do their best for their Houses, for each other and for themselves.

Safeguarding

Spring Grove School is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All members of staff and volunteers receive training and guidance on safeguarding matters. In addition, we have staff members who have received more intensive training to ensure that the welfare of the children is central to our aims.
